For 2018 we have again joined forces with Kaapstad Motorcycle Adventure Tours to explore three amazing countries in southern Africa and encounter some remarkable wildlife. Starting in Johannesburg on 15th September the tour will cover five provinces of South Africa and the kingdoms of Lesotho and Swaziland.
Day One (Saturday)
Arrive in Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport and be met by your hosts. Transfer directly to your accommodation nearby. At rest for this day to settle in and acclimatise after your flight.
Day Two (Sunday)
An early start with a trip out to experience the Soweto Township with a local guide. You will get to see the sights of this famous township and see the house of former South African President Nelson Mandela. Arrive back mid-afternoon and meet with the hire bike supplier to complete the paperwork for your ride. Load your bike and set it up ready for your Overland Explore trip.
Day Three (Monday)
We will let the rush hour traffic clear then head south out of Jo’burg via the highway so we can put some distance between us and the city. Stopping for lunch along the way in the small town of Reizt then heading into the type of scenery you came to south Africa for. A short stop in Clarens and then you will be taken into the mountains of Golden Gate National Park. The views are amazing and usually plenty of wildlife in the form of antelope, Zebra and Wildebeest. Overnight in SanParks accommodation at Golden Gate National Park.
Day Four (Tuesday)
An early start and head out to pick up the road that will take us across the border into Lesotho. Known as the mountain Kingdom you will ride some of the most stunning scenery around. That evening we will stay at the top of Sani Pass.
Day Five (Wednesday)
Breath-taking views as we decend the famous Sani Pass. A road that joins the border posts of Lesotho and South Africa. Once at the bottom we will then head north making our way up through Kwazulu-Natal (KZN) until we reach the small settlement of Rorke’s Drift. Probably best know because of the film Zulu we will take you to the museum set on the actual battle sight where you will learn the true story and see honors to bravery on both sides of the conflict. We will overnight at Rorkes Drift Hotel which is set on the banks of the Buffalo River just 3 kms from the battle site.
Day Six (Thursday)
Some gravel roads as we depart Rorke’s Drift and then the ride up country to the border with Swaziland. A beautiful peaceful country which still has a King. We will enter the Mlilwane Game Reserve where we will be staying for then next two nights. Your accommodation is in traditional Swazi beehive huts. Constructed of woven grass but on the inside we have “mod cons” such as electric light and shower/toilets. Dining on site.
Day Seven (Friday)
A lazy start to the day if you wish. Breakfast can be followed with a Game Drive with one of the reserves Rangers or maybe swap your motorcycle for a horse and take a slow ride around the reserve. Try out a mountain bike or just a gentle walk on one of the many trails. If you wish of course you can head off on your motorcycle and do some exploring of Swaziland. In the afternoon it is quite popular to visit the local Cultural Village nearby and watch the traditional dance and hear the story of the villages layout. Dinner on camp again with maybe some more traditional dance this time from your staff hosts.
Day Eight (Saturday)
Leave the reserve after breakfast and head up through Swaziland to the border in the north. We will be crossing back into South Africa just after lunch and from there make our way to Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp. This is a camp set inside the Kruger National Park gates. Until very recently Motorcycles have not been allowed into this camp. We will be able to buy food on the way to the camp and then we will do some “self catering” for our evening meal.
Day Nine (Sunday)
Exit KNP via Crocodile Bride Gate and make our way west to Nelspruit then north to Hazyview and on to our Bush experience at the Famous Moholoholo game reserve Mountain View.
Day Ten (Monday)
After breakfast you will be able to make your choice of the days activities. You can visit the Moholoholo animal rehabilitation centre (included in price), take a trip on the Blyde River dam on a river boat (extra), or take a ride to the top of the mountains which over look the reserve. Your guide will also take you on a ride around part of the Game Reserve (conditions permitting) so that you can get close to the wild life on your bike. That evening you will also been treated to a Game drive and a bush dinning experiences (weather permitting). This really is a very relaxed reserve but make no mistake it is very real as far as wildlife encounters go.
Day Eleven (Tuesday)
Say our good byes to the staff after breakfast and head off into the mountains that surround the Blyde River Canyon. The Thrid largest canyon in the world and the largest Green canyon. The twisties up and over the mountains are a pleasure to ride with a stop along the way to visit “God’s Window”. We will overnight in Dullstroom at the Dullstroom Inn. A pub with history and a great bar. Great pub grub and a log fire that is said to have burned continually for 37 years. The pub was used as a hospital during the Anglo-Boer war.
Day Twelve (Wednesday)
An easy start to this your final days riding. Take time to wander around the town for some final purchases before starting the ride back into JHB. Your guide will show you some wildlife along the way in one of the most unlikely places. Arrive back to the hotel in Johannesburg where your bags have been stored and either prepare to take your flight back home or arrange to stay another night before extending your stay with a visit to Cape Town.
