Things are changing for Adventure Ashram too, the adventurer’s charity we’ll be featuring in the forthcoming issue of Overland.
Songkran is Thailand’s New Year’s Festival, celebrated from April 13th, (Thailand’s New Year’s Day) and for the following 2 days. It is the most amazing festival and if you are already travelling in SE Asia you should consider experiencing it. Nathan Milward wrote about his experiences there back in issue 15. The name is derived from the Sanskrit word saṃkrānti literally meaning ‘Astrological passage’, heralding transformation or change. So, it seems completely fitting that the adventurers’ charity, Adventure Ashram is set to begin adventuring in this breath-taking country for the first time later this year.
Adventure Ashram is a small but mighty charity driven by the spirit of adventure to directly support health and education grassroot projects in India. During their adventures they ride motorcycles or drive cars, and volunteer in the communities they have grown to love. As they enter their second decade of purposeful adventure, as well as continuing work in India, they are off to explore the stunning country of Thailand and venture into the world of off road motorcycling on a dirt bike rally from November 9th – 22nd 2018. The route is planned to take in some of the most stunning jungle terrain you are ever likely to come across, with visits to hill tribes and a city tour of Bangkok, plus if you decide to go, you will be raising money for this tiny but effective charity. During Songkran, water is thrown to welcome the rainy season along with talcum powder. We can’t promise this… although it might be very welcome, but you will be able to wash and brush up after your long, sweaty and awe-inspiring ride in a comfortable guest house each evening! Watch the sun go down, have a cold beer and talk about your days ride… what could be better?
