If you are planning to head somewhere hot, or need to commute in the city as lockdown is slowly being lifted and you don’t fancy public transport, Italian style-merchants Tucano Urbano have introduced a number of summer-ready mesh jackets for this year that enable real breathability in warmer weather. They’ve also introduced a face mask to filter pollutants and act as a hygenic barrier.
The ROUTER jacket is not your typical mesh jacket. Alongside its super-breathable mesh construction is a separate windproof and waterproof stretch jacket that can be worn either over or under the jacket. In the case of an unexpected downpour in poor visibility, the extra layer can be worn over the ROUTER, which not only ensures riders are protected from the elements, but also improves rider visibility. It can also be worn underneath the ROUTER to keep the wind at bay without impacting the style of the jacket. When it’s not needed, the extra layer can be stored in the large back pocket. Please note, we haven’t yet tried this jacket so can’t say how well the system works.
The ROUTER also features genuine cowhide leather inserts on cuffs, collar and more, shoulder and elbow armour as standard, as well as a pocket for a back protector (sold separately) and fold-out reflective panels on the cuffs for visibility on demand. It does have internal and external pockets, but not many – just 2 on the outside because of the nature of the garment – which isn’t great for serious travel. If on the other hand you’re flying in to Vietnam for 2 weeks and don’t want to look like a dirtbike rider…
The washable and reusable face mask Tucano are now selling is called the RINA. Each pack contains two masks so one can be worn while you wash the other. Tucano Urbano recommend hand washing the mask in hot water (45-55-degrees Celsius) with soap, adding 10ml of bleach (50ml per 1000ml of water) and leaving for 30 minutes to disinfect. We’d like to hope the masks are colourfast! After rinsing the RINA thoroughly in clean water it should be laid flat in a clean, dry place to allow it to dry completely before reusing. With an elastic slider on the side, you can adjust the tightness of each mask so one size fits all.
